Understanding Social Integration
Social integration stands for achieving a “society for all” in which every individual, each with rights and responsibilities, has an active role to play. It is a goal with broad societal appeal. It aims to provide equality of opportunity for all, irrespective of race, sex, class, age, ethnicity, caste, cultural background, political affiliation or religious belief. It is also used to define the process of moving from coexistence to social cohesion. The term Social integration is widely used in social policy, political science and sociology. Particularly used in modern-day policy development to describe concepts aiming at fostering society which is stable, secure, Just, tolerant, respects diversity, equal opportunity and participation of all persons in society. Active engagement of people in social roles helps them build self esteem and a sense of commitment to the community around them.
Importance of Social Integration in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is in a new era of nation-building - a context that calls for a determined effort on social integration and transformation. As the country emerges from decades of violent conflict, infrastructure and economic development have become the key strategies to foster lasting peace and stability. However, inequality and social exclusion wherever it is present must be addressed immediately in order to ensure a society that respects diversity and values inclusive citizenship.
