Capacity Development

FLICT’s main objective is as follows: Civil society organisations in cooperation with each other and with state actors contribute significantly towards the acceptance of democratic pluralistic values and take an active role in establishing mechanisms for civil non-violent conflict resolution.

Therefore, it is necessary to foster critical self-reflection, to build up CSOs’ capacities to design and implement more effective conflict transformation interventions, leading to change on the personal, relational and structural levels and to strengthen networking activities and dialogue. As such, the initiatives FLICT is supporting have a double goal. While they encourage a broader social discourse on the conflict situation and nurture a deeper understanding of pluralism and diversity, they are also functioning as learning platforms and opportunities for the civil society to explore different ways to engage in long term processes for social change and to reflect upon their effectiveness.

Capacity Development

It has been recognised that partner organisations need to strengthen their capacities especially in the following areas:

Conceptualizing conflict transformation - to undertake meaningful and effective conflict transformation and peace building initiatives on various issues and at different levels (personal, relational and structural).

Self evaluation and organizational development – to reflect and improve their organizational structure and management and make processes and work transparent and conflict sensitive.

Project cycle and result based management – to be able to deal with all different stages of the project management cycle effectively.

The role that the state plays in creating an enabling environment has been aptly recognised. Therefore, not only capacity building support for non-state actors but also for state actors will be provided for both sectors to function in an effective manner rather than the state actors playing a more powerful and regulatory role. The capacity to develop understanding and willingness to learn the collective responsibility for CTPB work will be nurtured and is envisaged to reduce the prevailing hostility towards civil society actors.

Concept and means for provision of capacity building:

In order to assess each organizations and actors needs for capacity building and to respond to them FLICT has developed a unique capacity building approach. The first step in this approach is a thorough needs assessment by a guided systematic self analysis of the partner organization. According to the assessment results partners are provided with a set of different services. These include trainings (off the job), coaching (on the job) and support of networking activities.

The services are provided by the FLICT Programme Officers, the regional CCPI Consultants and other external experts.
