FLICT started operating in 2003. The second project phase 2006-2008 was recently extended until December 2010.
FLICT supports local initiatives in Sri Lanka working towards a lasting and meaningful peace through capacity building and funding. The project is based on the assumption that active and skilled civil society organisations can contribute significantly towards the acceptance of pluralistic values and non-violent conflict resolution; leading to a peaceful, tolerant society, which adopts more democratic means of decision-making and is able to cherish diversity and pluralistic values.
FLICT was established in 2003, when the socio-political environment was conducive for actors like the business community, NGOs, or the Government to undertake initiatives to strengthen the peace process and to address more deep rooted conflict transformation needs in the country. Partner organizations throughout the island working with youth, media, business, and community organisations documented many positive outcomes and have helped FLICT to become a respected and successful entity in conflict transformation.
Anyhow, the people of Sri Lanka had to witness a return to military interventions and terror acts in the last years. So why continue peace building efforts?
Although the framework conditions have changed FLICT believes not only that there is still enough space for peace building and conflict transformation, but that the need for initiatives is even greater. The vast reservoir of energy and commitment of peace loving people and organizations must be supported and strengthened. Peace can not be expected to “just happen and persist”, but needs a long-lasting and continuous engagement from civil society and the state. Hence, we do not want to withdraw from our activities, but try to be flexible in our approach, to learn form partners and past experiences and to be strong at heart. Our dream has not changed -
a peaceful, pluralistic, democratic, inclusive and prosperous Sri Lanka. |
